I really like the concept of all of these themes, but time vs space almost feels to me like you're taking steampunk and pitting it against stardust (plus the fact that stardust is space themed, which we just had last year).
My favorite is Arctic vs Tropic. It's really smart and a fun concept to mess with! You could make attacks with characters in the respective climate, maybe even beach themed pieces? Can't wait for artfight this year!!!

The main reason why I'm commenting is just to show the tiniest bit of support in hopes it'll come back sometime. I'm glad I'm not alone; I see a few people mourning. I wonder if it was removed because it was pretty low in votes (and just has outspoken supporters), or if the higher ups just weren't feeling it. Order versus Chaos was super popular (it even technically won one year, and it was Top 3 at least twice), and that one was removed, so who knows.

But I'm rooting for you Tragicomedy! You literally can't win this year, but someday, perhaps!

Many of these themes have been altered, removed, or recreated. Glimmer V Gloom is a direct connection to Wither V Bloom which was three years ago.
Many themes have been suggested like Order V Chaos or Comedy V Tragedy or Heros V Villains. Just because they are suggested, does not mean they should be on the ballot. There are only ten slots. I dont care who suggested them ^^;; The mod team should have chosen better (especially if youve seen previous theme polls, you would know).

This has become more and more like a grift. Also the almost hostile take over last year just for a "whoopsi nevermind" is insulting to say the least.

My only complaint is that they changed knights vs dragons to unicorns vs dragons 😔 (knight enjoyer) Tbf though we don't wanna have another Stardust vs Seafoam incident where half the site is on Stardust (Dragons) lmao

Heart vs Soul is so intriguing for me. What could that mean? Does it only touch color palette, like Soul means more vibrant colors like blue, green etc, and Heart subdued reds and pinks? Or could Soul mean ghostly and ethereal stuff, and Heart blood and gore? Or is it more subtle, like Soul - focusing on your inside depth, while Heart is reaching out to others with empathy? I would loove to see that.

I don't really care what the themes are. Sure some seem like repeats, but in the end every year ive been in had a unique theme choosen in the end and as long as the aesthetics make up for it its fine. It's not that big of a deal honestly.
I can agree a bt on the site thing, I am not particularly bothered by t but I also didn't donate so my opinion shouldn't be held so high in that regard. I also don't know how scuffed of a code the site is actually to work with and yall are volunteers so who am I to judge.

I really wish arctic vs tropic or fossils vs crystals get picked...

I'm glad artfight exists and it would not, if there weren't so many people in the artfight team working hard to give us this yearly fun💖
While yes there are things to improve - I think it already works quite well and is a yearly highlight for me.
I'm again hyped for this years artfight and hope it will be fun as every year! :D

Okay, so... whatever team it's going to be, pls I hope it's not Lovestruck vs Heartbreak. That one wasn't thought through at all.

Just imagine what the banners would look like: On one there would be sad, heartbroken characters and on the other characters randomly in love with each other! Both options totally disregard the actual relationship status and possibly even the (a)sexuality of these characters. On top of that it might even go straight against the OCs owners' permissions. So, if I had pledged enough money to have my character featured on a banner this year... oh god I would dread Lovestruck vs Heartbreak getting voted.


That said... I also think a lot of the cooler themes are missing this year on the list. Chaos vs Order, Heroes vs Villains, Trinkets vs Treasure, Clouds vs Caverns, Rain vs Shine. They were all more diverse themes than... what we're left with now. I get the feeling the person who made the poll really opted for one or two specific aesthetics and only left the themes representing those in.

I've long felt that the users were once again being scammed out of their donation money, so my only hope for 2025 is that the mods can keep the site running for another round. My trust in the current leadership is still very low, but hopefully, I'll see you all around in July! I love the concept of ArtFight with all my heart and it's a pity this whole site is held together with electric tape and broken BBCode.

I don't quite understand why we have themes though. They don't affect the attacks. Sometimes people just paste on an overlay over each of their attacks but it doesn't really do anything. I would like the themes to actually matter at some point.

Honestly Heart VS Soul feel like the same thing. What would even be the banner for it? I don't hate it but it's not one of my favourites, but that's just a me problem (and the only thing that comes to my mind is Pokémon HeartGold and Soulsilver wormdeep )

Be it romantic love or not, a broken heart is still a broken heart and conveys sadness to me. So, I REALLY hope they won't make characters sad/cry on the banners if that theme is going to get voted.

The only way they could make it more appealing to me is... if they made it super edgy, e.g. LoveSTRUCK with a lightning/storm of love theme and HeartBREAK with a hammer/shattered heart theme. That actually could be kinda cool imo.

To be specific, the wording was "The tiers are representative of paid work; we still have devs who wish to remain volunteers and are free to work on features they'd like to implement, so some features may be added or completed outside of the tiers."
Which, to me, sounds like their paid developers are paid to work on those things in order, but unpaid devs can work on whatever they want. So the money would be going into the tiers, but as no money is going to the volunteer devs, they're exempt from that.

As someone who solely has humanoid OCs I would be mad, indeed. I don't want Unicorn vs Dragon to win, because I don't resonate with either of them.
Yeah, maybe not everyone with only humanoid characters feels that way. But when drawing attacks the artist can choose to only draw what resonates with them. When choosing a theme the participants represent for a whole month of Artfight I'd prefer to have choices that don't have an obvious "Oh I prefer to draw this so I'm on that team"-vibe. Vampires vs Werewolves already was kinda splitting the artists very obviously and I'm no big fan of that.

All of the themes sound really good! Also, being able to mass download defenses is really helpful! I do have one suggestion about it, though I do understand if it would be too hard to implement: the ability to mass download defenses by year. Like, we're able to sort received art by year, and then download them that way. This would be especially helpful for future years, that way we're not downloading the same pieces of art every year. :)

I'm not really too keen on the themes for this Art Fight. It's not as exciting as last year's in comparison, but regardless of which themes wins it certainly will be lots of fun hopefully like my first art fight was last year. I do hope that there will be more in-depth information regarding the financial situation in which our donated money was used. Anything transparent needs to be said upfront even as a simple 'thank you' to those that keep up the site via donations and/or participating goes a long way! This long of silence and having more people step down is a understandable but also concerning especially since majority of Art Fight is volunteer work. Hoping you guys can tie some loose ends so that everyone here knows exactly what's going on so that we can keep supporting and having Art Fight each year

That’s true. Man, I would have loved to have participated in the year of Steampunk vs Cyberpunk too! I would have chosen Steampunk, been a huge fan of Steampunk for a few years now. Still sad that it was the theme the year before I joined. I agree though, blessing people with art is more important to me than the winning theme as well. Still excited to see the results though.😁

Hi, just a concern with the theme poll, seems a little... meh to have lovestruck vs heartbreak (a very amatonormative theme) as a potential theme, especially when the theme poll released during arospec awareness week
We understand the concerns this theme may have caused and it was not our intention to exclude anybody from participating in Art Fight.
Themes are meant to be open-ended, so they can mean something completely different depending on the person. While Lovestruck vs Heartbreak could be viewed romantically, it could also be viewed platonically (falling “in love” with a new series, heartbreak during a friendship, etc.).
1. It's incredibly condescending to explain to a group, which frequently reinterpret concepts with undeniable romantic connotations, to do the same thing that they're tired of having to do.
2. additionally, it's an old line, that aspecs have heard of many, many times in response to any attempts to discuss amatonormativity, and most frequently with the aim of shutting down discussion by putting those who raised the issue on the defensive.
3. I still think the response is disappointing all things considered. Given that very consistently, it is aspecs who raise the issue first, and then other users respond with 'I don't see the issue', it feels targeted to deliberately skirt the concerns with non-responses that essentially rehash the default responses.

Allyship isn't an end goal, it's an ongoing act, and I definitely think that you guys can do better than this.

I find it funny that you've seen most hate for City Lights vs Forest Nights. It's clearly the top contender so far if THIS (just for fun) poll on Tumblr is in any way representative.

On the same note, I think Lovestruck vs Heartbreak won't make it as this year's theme anyway. (Although I agree that I found it very weird to see it on the list. Knowing how many aroace people are part of the Artfight community I never thought we would get an option like this one. oO;)

The theme I've seen much hate for is actually Glimmer vs Gloom. People are saying it's similar to Bloom vs Wither and I don't get it. A flower isn't the same as shimmering lights and mushrooms/rot is not the same as darkness. Actually Destruction vs Creation is way closer to Bloom vs Wither. But... what do I know? xDDD

I guess City Lights vs Forest Nights has people very split because many people love it, and also many people really hate it for being too ~aesthetic~. As for Glimmer vs Gloom, yeah, there's been a lot of hate for that one, too... I get that the words are similar (Glimmer/Wither and Gloom/Bloom) but they mean very, very different things, so calling them "the same" is an... interesting take. Another one I've seen was that it's like Flight Rising, because one of the games on that site is called "Glimmer and Gloom", but it's not like FR owns the concept of those things. Same with people calling Time vs Space, or occasionally other themes, too Pokémon-adjacent, like, Pokémon does not own the idea of "Time and Space" xD Or Heart and Soul, for that matter, the games were named after the idea not other way round...

My personal favorite is Fossils vs Crystals, which isn't all that high on the Tumblr poll, but maybe being less divisive will help it along. A Lua can hope 👀

I think you'll recognise that users going out of their way only to state their opinion that romance-repulsed aros are overreacting and trying to police the words they use (as well as deriding terms like amatonormativity, and remarking that they need to find real issues to care about) is the bog-standard form of microaggression that's used on Tumblr.

at the risk of dragging on a topic, i want to point out the difference between amatonormativity and arophobia because i think that's a sticking point in the conversation that's causing some confusion. while there's certainly some overlap sometimes, they're not the same thing, and it's important to understand when someone's saying a thing or action is one vs. the other.

amatonormativity is the platforming and centering of romantic love as the ideal relationship, as well as the assumption that everyone wants and benefits from a romantic relationship. arophobia is antagonism directed at aromantic people and/or discrimination against aro people.

the platforming of valentine's day as a major holiday? there's some amatonormativity there. while many people choose to celebrate it in a platonic way, it cannot be separated from its romantic origins as a christian feast day for the patron saint of romantic love - and that's not to mention the messaging surrounding it (emphasis on couples, "that special someone," etc.) and people feeling the need to distinguish separate platonic versions of the holiday ("galentine's day," "palentine's day," etc.) the act of choosing to celebrate valentine's day? not inherently amatonormative, that's a personal decision. if you ask someone what they're doing for valentine's day and they say "i don't celebrate it, i'm aromantic and choose not to celebrate it," you made an amatonormative assumption, but there's no harm done as long as you respect the other person. however, if you tell the other person, "well, you don't have to celebrate it in a romantic way because there are other forms of love!" and continue to pester them about it, or otherwise put them down for their opinions on the subject, that's arophobic. lecturing aromantic people on different kinds of love when they bring up amatonormativity is one of the most common microaggressions against aro people, which i would like to point out because people are still doing it here in this very comment section. we already know there are different kinds of love. this is not news to us.

bringing it back to the discussion at hand: having a "lovestruck vs. heartbreak" theme, on its face, is not inherently amatonormative. however, the way people treat the theme can be. i do wonder what the people in charge of making the site assets were thinking about doing to represent the theme if it wins because i'd be willing to bet it would be largely represented by couples for one team and "bitter" lonely people for the other. the fact of the matter is, because of the biases present in our society, these words tend to carry more romantic connotations (this is amatonormativity.) sure, you can interpret the theme however you would like, but that doesn't change the fact that for most people, these words have that romantic connotation. if you tell the average person something has you "lovestruck," they will almost always assume you mean you have a crush on someone. is any of this arophobic? in my opinion, no. however, some of the backlash against aro people voicing their personal concerns has been very arophobic. people voicing a personal concern only to be shut down by others accusing them of overreacting or being "terminally online," saying it's "not that deep," calling their concerns "stupid," all of this is arophobia. i think people who are not on tumblr should read some of the things people have been saying over there because it has been textbook case aphobia on a site that already had a large-scale targeted harassment campaign against the aro community that did a lot of damage to it.

these concerns do not exist in a vacuum. amatonormativity is a societal pressure that follows us everywhere, and those of us who do not or cannot conform to it are much more aware of its everyday presence than the average person. that is why people feel alienated by the theme: not because of the theme itself, but how the community at large will likely interpret it. that does not mean the theme itself is inherently bad or discriminating against them, but they have the right to feel the way they do, and the dismissal and belittling of people who have raised concerns is absolutely aphobic.

It's normal to feel that way, either you ARE improving and your style is just changing, or you have a form of art block. Sometimes there's a stretch where drawings just don't turn out, I've had it happen, I'm sure we've all had it happen. There's a few things you can do, take a hiatus, try drawing something new, look for inspiration on YouTube or Pinterest, etc.
Another really important thing to do is to not compare yourself to others. We all learn and evolve at different rates, and we all have different styles, so keep that in mind and stay awesome :)

as they say, do it scared, but you'll thank yourself later if you do it.
